Origin

Bashful is one of the support characters in Disney's 1937 animated feature film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". He is one of the dwarfs whom Snow White meets in their cottage. His name comes from him being prone to blushing and hiding behind his beard when he feels awkward or embarrassed.

Bashful works alongside his fellow dwarfs in the mine, helping dig for diamonds. Once the gems are collected, Sleepy transports them to Doc, who sorts the valuable ones while Dopey cleans up the worthless ones. When the workday ends, Doc sounds the alarm, and the dwarfs head home singing "Heigh-Ho", with Bashful walking between Sleepy and Sneezy.

Upon reaching their cottage, they are startled to see lights inside, assuming a monster has taken over. As they cautiously search the house, Bashful is briefly upset that the sugar was washed from his cup but is delighted by the fresh flowers—until he shows them to Sneezy, whose powerful sneeze sends everyone flying. Convinced the intruder is upstairs, Doc nervously sends Dopey to investigate. Dopey panics and flees, causing a commotion that results in the dwarfs mistakenly attacking him. Once they realize their error, they decide to confront the "monster" together—only to discover it is actually Snow White. Bashful, awestruck, describes her as "beautiful, just like an angel". When she wakes up, she guesses the name of each dwarf, naming Bashful second.

After some discussion, they agree Snow White can stay if she cooks and cleans. Before supper, she insists they wash their hands, which they reluctantly do, except Grumpy, whom they force into the tub. That night, the dwarfs and Snow White have fun with singing and dancing, and after some hesitation, Bashful sings a verse and plays the accordion. He later sleeps inside a drawer.

When the Queen poisons Snow White, the dwarfs chase the Witch up a mountain, where lightning strikes and sends her tumbling to her doom. Heartbroken, they build a glass coffin for Snow White, unable to bury her. Sleepy mourns his friend—until the Prince's kiss awakens her. Happy to know that Snow White is alive, which Bashful notices first, they cheer and prepare to say goodbye, while Snow White kisses each dwarf and rides away along with the Prince.
