Origin
Riley Andersen is the overarching protagonist and the main location for her emotions in the Disney/Pixar Inside Out franchise. When Riley is born, her first emotion, Joy, appears as she smiles at her parents. Shortly after, Sadness emerges, causing her to cry, but Joy intervenes to make her happy again. As Riley grows up in Minnesota, other emotions — Disgust, Anger, and Fear — develop. Riley becomes predominantly cheerful, with Joy often sidelining Sadness, who only emerges during tantrums. Riley excels in hockey, playing for the Prairie Dogs.
When Riley and her family move to San Francisco, she becomes homesick and melancholic, missing her life in Minnesota. The new environment, including a disappointing house and broccoli pizza, deepens her sadness. Joy tries to keep her happy, but Sadness inadvertently makes Riley cry in class, creating a sad core memory. Joy attempts to discard this memory, leading to an argument where she and Sadness get lost in Riley's mind. Without Joy, Riley becomes irritable and withdrawn.
Matters worsen as Riley video chats with her friend Meg from Minnesota, feeling replaced when Meg talks about her new best friend. Frustrated during hockey tryouts, Riley's performance suffers. Overwhelmed by her dissatisfaction with San Francisco and longing for Minnesota, Riley decides to run away. She steals her mother's credit card and skips school to catch a bus back to Minnesota. Her emotions struggle internally, leaving Riley apathetic and depressed.
Eventually, Joy and Sadness return to Headquarters, prompting Riley to realize her mistake. She rushes back home, confesses her true feelings to her worried parents, and they share their own nostalgia for Minnesota. Riley finally expresses her emotions, and the family begins to adjust positively to their new life. A year later, Riley is thriving on a new hockey team, the Fog Horns, and has embraced San Francisco as her home.
In Inside Out 2, Riley grows up into a teenager, and after puberty kicks in, new emotions join the ensemble when she arrived at hockey camp: Anxiety, Ennui, Embarrassment, Envy and Nostalgia. For Riley to fit in, Anxiety kicks her old emotions out because she fears that Riley needs new friends like Val and her team, the Firehawks, or she would be totally alone in high school after hearing her friends, Bree and Grace, are moving to another school next year after camp. During the last day of camp, Riley had a panic attack after almost injuring Grace in the field, causing Anxiety to build too much pressure on Riley after making her new Sense of Self, made out of the core memories in the Belief System, way below the root of her mind.
