Origin

Fungus is a supporting character and a minor antagonist in Disney/Pixar's 2001 animated film, Monsters, Inc. He works as Randall's scare assistant and is shown to be clumsy and cowardly. Fungus often faces bullying and abuse from Randall, lacking the courage to stand up to him. Despite this, he initially displays kindness and apologizes to Mike after being captured.

In the movie, Fungus assists Randall in creating the Scream Extractor, a device intended to "revolutionize the scaring industry" (according to Randall). However, due to Sulley's intervention, Fungus himself becomes a victim of the machine, which is most likely a painful experience. After that, Fungus operates the machine's controls during another attempt, this time using Boo as a subject. He helps Randall chase after Sulley and Mike but falls behind as he is congratulated by other monsters for supposedly breaking a Scare record.

After Randall's banishment and Mr. Waternoose's arrest, Fungus gets the job to make children laugh. He thanks Sulley for forgiving him and assigning him a position on the Laugh Floor. While it is unclear if Fungus becomes a scarer, he is grateful for the opportunity.

Notably, Fungus did not appear in "Monsters University", even though it was initially planned for him to be included.

The character's voice actor, Frank Oz, is recognized for portraying friendly monsters on "Sesame Street" (Fungus' voice is similar to Bert and Fozzie Bear, both voiced by Oz).
