Origin

Tanglefoot is a captivating Disney character who burst onto the scene in the enthralling "Mickey Mouse and his Horse Tanglefoot" storyline within the Mickey Mouse daily comic strip. From June 12 to October 7, 1933, readers were introduced to the enchanting world of Tanglefoot and the unforgettable adventures he embarked upon alongside Mickey Mouse.

Shortly following Mickey Mouse's adventures as a Mail Pilot, where he assisted the government's secret service in rescuing missing pilots and catching criminals Sylvester Shyster and Pete, he was rewarded with a substantial sum of $5000 in 1933. Mickey and his girlfriend Minnie Mouse decided to invest the money in horseracing.

During their discussion, two unscrupulous gamblers overheard Mickey's plans. Seizing an opportunity, they purchased an old and decrepit horse named Tanglefoot from a dubious source, falsely convincing Mickey that the horse was a high-quality racehorse. Mickey, trusting and unsuspecting, paid the gamblers the full $5000 for what he believed was a prized steed.

Mickey entered Tanglefoot into a race with 1000 to 1 odds, still unaware of the horse's true state. As the race started, the hapless Tanglefoot stumbled and fell over, losing the race. Mickey's unwavering belief in his new companion, however, led him to continue training and supporting Tanglefoot. In the next race, Tanglefoot's determination and Mickey's care allowed the horse to rise from his struggles, standing on his hind legs and completing the race in a remarkable bipedal fashion, coming victorious.

Although Tanglefoot made appearances in a few more of Gottfredson's tales, his presence waned over the years in the USA comics, fading into relative obscurity. While he might have featured in foreign Mickey Mouse comics, his prominence remained primarily within the realm of comics.

Notably, the legendary Disney artist Carl Barks contributed to the Tanglefoot legacy by working on a Mickey Mouse cartoon concept. This unreleased animation envisioned Mickey as a riding policeman chasing Pete on horseback, with Tanglefoot serving as the source of comedic relief. Unfortunately, the cartoon never progressed beyond the storyboard stage. Tanglefoot even found his way onto the poster for "Mickey's Polo Team", despite his absence from the actual short.
