Origin
Chief Tui is a supporting character in the Disney's 2016 animated film "Moana" and its 2024 sequel. He is the former chief/village leader of Motunui, Moana's father, Sina's husband and Gramma Tala's son. Tui has always seen Motunui as a paradise and dismissed the idea of leaving as reckless, especially when Moana wanted to sail in the open ocean. Despite the efforts to steer Moana away from her fascination with the ocean, Tui and his wife, Sina, could not stop Moana's longing for adventure.
When Moana reaches her teenage years, Tui feels it is time to take her to a sacred spot on the island, where past chiefs laid a stone to mark the beginning of their leadership. As Moana is next in line to lead, Tui eagerly expressed his pride in her future as chief. He urges her to let go of her dreams of exploration, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the well-being of her people and family.
When the island's food supply starts to dwindle, Moana proposes to sail beyond the reef to find new sources of food, but this suggestion makes Tui angry, and he reminds everyone of the long-standing rule against leaving the island. When Moana argues back, it only deepens Tui's frustration, and he storms off, leaving her confused and upset. Sina then explains the traumatic incident that killed Tui's best friend years ago, offering some context to his strong opposition, though it does not resolve Moana's internal conflict.
When Moana reveals knowing of the ancient boats that belonged to their ancestors, Tui regrets not destroying them earlier, so he grabs a torch and heads to the cave, intending to burn the boats. Moana tries to stop him, showing him the heart, but he dismisses it as an ordinary rock. Soon Tui and Moana hear that Tala is gravely ill. They rush to her side, but the doctors confirm there is no cure. Tui remain at his mother's bedside as she passes away.
While Moana is away, Tui and Sina continue to monitor the island's failing crops, until one day they witness the miraculous return of life to the land. Shortly after, Moana returns from her journey, and her parents run to greet her. Although Moana admits to venturing beyond the reef, Tui smiles and acknowledges that it suits her.
As shown in "Moana 2", Tui and Sina have another daughter, Simea, who first appears in the sequel.
